Guide to SPC Flooring Technology and Selection

SPC flooring has become a common choice for modern home renovations because of its rigid stone-plastic core, water resistance and dimensional stability. The material sits within the broader rigid-core luxury vinyl category and is distinguished from traditional flexible vinyl and wood-based alternatives by its density and structural strength.

Its performance depends on a multi-layer construction, with wear-layer thickness, core density, acoustic rating and indoor-air certifications serving as key measures for buyers and installers.

What is SPC flooring?

SPC stands for stone plastic composite, also sometimes called stone polymer composite. It is the main type of rigid-core luxury vinyl flooring on the market today. Its core is made from a mixture of limestone powder, PVC resin and stabilizers, and this high-density stone-based core is central to its performance.

Compared with traditional flexible vinyl flooring or wood flooring, SPC flooring offers significant advantages in water resistance, dimensional stability and impact resistance.

The sandwich structure of SPC flooring

Each SPC plank is a multilayer composite — a “sandwich” structure typically made up of five layers from top to bottom:

  • UV/ceramic coating: The top protective film determines gloss level and provides fade and stain resistance.
  • Wear layer: A transparent protective film measured in mils, or thousandths of an inch. This is the core indicator of SPC flooring durability.
  • Decorative layer: A high-resolution printed film that creates wood-grain or stone visuals.
  • SPC core layer: The “heart” of the plank, compressed from limestone powder and PVC to provide hard, stable support.
  • Backing pad: A pre-attached cushion layer at the bottom. It is not included on all products, but high-quality SPC ranges usually feature it as standard.
SPC versus WPC

Within the rigid-core category, SPC and WPC, or wood plastic composite, are often compared. In simple terms, SPC has a stone-based core that is denser and harder, while WPC has a wood-based core with foamed components and a softer feel underfoot. Because of its very high density, SPC flooring is more stable when subjected to heavy impacts and temperature changes.

Core metric What to examine
Wear-layer thickness Measured in mils; higher values indicate greater durability.
Core density Determines impact and indentation resistance.
Acoustic rating IIC/STC ratings affect sound insulation.
Indoor air quality certification Helps ensure a healthy indoor environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SPC flooring truly fully waterproof?
Yes. The stone-based core gives SPC flooring all-around water resistance. This means not only the surface is water-resistant; even in damp conditions, the core layer will not absorb water and swell as wood flooring can.
What are the subfloor requirements for installing SPC flooring?
SPC flooring uses a floating click-lock installation and can be laid over almost any hard, flat substrate. Although it can mask minor surface imperfections, the substrate should remain dry, level and free of debris to protect the locking joints.
How can the durability of SPC flooring be assessed?
The key is to check the wear-layer thickness in mils. The thicker the wear layer, the stronger the floor's resistance to scratches and everyday wear. Product density and relevant quality certifications should also be considered.
